What is Fragrance?
Fragrance is a combination of chemicals that produce a scent. It can be natural or synthetic and it is found in perfume, cologne, and soap. It is also found in a variety of other products like cosmetics, food, cleaning products and air fresheners. The fragrance industry is a billion dollar business. Fragrance can be a pleasant or unpleasant smell, and can even affect your mood, so choosing the right fragrance for you is important. Fragrances are a mix of more than 3,500 chemicals that give personal care, cleaning and other products their unique smell. Fragrance ingredients may cause a range of health problems, from headaches and skin rashes to nausea and asthma. Manufacturers are not required to list these ingredients, and even “unscented” products often contain a blend of fragrance chemicals to mask less-pleasant ingredients. Perfumes were traditionally composed of natural aromatic oils. Today, however, the majority of perfumes are synthetic and may be derived from natural or chemical materials. Perfumes are divided into five main groups loosely based on the concentration of aromatic compounds they contain. They are parfum, eau de parfum (EdP), eau de toilette (EdT) and eau de cologne (EdC). The three structural parts of perfumes are head, heart, and base notes. Head or top notes are the first impression of a perfume when applied, and evaporate quickly. They are usually a fresh or citrus smell and can include the scent of fruit, berries, herbs or spices. Middle or heart notes provide the body of a perfume, and are more intense than the head notes. They can linger for 5-30 minutes after a person is finished putting on perfume. They may have a powdery, floral or musky quality. Base or woody notes are the last to evaporate, and they can be a deep chypre or a rich amber. Developing a new perfume is both an art and science. Scentsy’s Fragrance Development Team is a group of highly skilled professionals that help create the next generation of beloved Scentsy fragrances. They consider a myriad of factors to determine the best composition for each perfume, including the time of day that it will be worn, the season, personality and lifestyle, as well as a host of other things. The word “fragrance” covers a wide spectrum of substances that can be used to enhance our sense of smell, but many people don’t realize that there is a direct connection between fragrance and emotion as well as the ability to trigger memories and emotions. The right perfume can enhance a person’s sense of smell and make them feel confident and beautiful. The wrong one can have the opposite effect, making people feel drab and unwashed. The key is to find a fragrance that suits you and your personality. Scentsy’s collection of more than 700 fragrances offers a huge selection to suit your preferences. We invite you to explore the fragrances that speak to you and discover what makes them so special.
