Almost every aspect of a person’s appearance can be affected by the fashion industry, from the hairstyle to the shoes worn with a particular outfit. In the United States, a large number of fashion designers are located in New York City, and many famous brands of clothing are produced there as well. New York City has also been the home to one of the first and oldest fashion weeks in the world.

These designers range from haute couture to ready-to-wear, with some specializing in men’s or women’s apparel while others focus on accessories and shoes.
The term “fashion” refers to a style or trend in dress, but it can also encompass the entire lifestyle of a certain time period. In the case of a style or fad in dress, it may be as simple as a change in the length of a skirt or the width of a collar. A toile, or muslin version of the garment is made, and after any necessary adjustments are made, the final design is cut from fabric. This fabric can then be sewn into a prototype or sample garment. Once the designer is satisfied with the result, it is ready for sale. In addition to creating original designs, some fashion designers are also artists who create works of art that may be functional or non-functional.
