What is Perfume?

Perfume is a complex mixture of odorants, including essential oils and synthetic aromatic chemicals. Contemporary perfumes contain from tens to hundreds of ingredients, and their scents are the result of the interaction between each component and the individual’s skin chemistry and olfactory system. Scents are influenced by a variety of factors, including mood and personality. For example, in one study, women who wore perfume with the intention of making a good impression on others reported that they chose their fragrance based on how it made them feel (e.g., romantic = heavier scents). Other factors included how the perfume matched their mood or the image they wanted to project.

Perfumery has been around for thousands of years. In fact, some ancient civilizations were quite skilled at extracting fragrant oils from natural plant materials, such as rose, jasmine, and ylang-ylang flowers. In addition, modern perfumers use tried-and-true techniques of oil extraction such as enfleurage, steam distillation, expression, and maceration.

In addition to natural fragrance materials, some perfumes are composed from a combination of organic and inorganic compounds. These ingredients are called synthetic aromatics, and their production involves a process known as synthesis. These chemically engineered odorants provide fragrances that can’t be easily and economically obtained from natural sources, such as coumarin and linalool. They also add subtle fragrance nuances that enhance or complement the natural fragrances of plants.

Whether it’s for everyday wear or special occasions, there are many types of perfumes to choose from. A perfume’s bottle size is an important consideration, as well as its longevity, projection, and sillage (the intensity of the fragrance’s scent).

Fragrance is a personal choice, so it’s important to select the right product for your needs. For a light, long-lasting signature scent, try a floral-fruity perfume with notes of yuzu, magnolia, and peony flower. Or, if you’re looking for something more earthy and sensual, try a woody-musk perfume with oakmoss, vetiver, and cedarwood.
