What Is Perfume?
Perfume is a combination of various ingredients to produce a pleasant odor that is sprayed on the body. Perfumes contain essential oils that are extracted from various natural sources like flowers, fruits, leaves, woods, and animal secretions. Alternatively, synthetic aromatic chemicals are used to replicate natural scents. Perfumes can be worn for various reasons including to improve one’s self-image, increase confidence, and enhance sexual appeal. Besides these psychological benefits, some studies have shown that a pleasant fragrance can help reduce anxiety and stress and increase pain tolerance through the activation of opioid pathways in the brain. Perfumers extract perfume oil from various plant and animal materials by a process called distillation. They mix these extracted materials with a base such as alcohol or distilled water, and then add a variety of chemical ingredients to alter the smell. This perfume is then stored in a bottle and can be sprayed as desired. The perfume can last for up to 24 hours depending on the strength of the scent and the individual’s skin chemistry. When choosing a perfume, there are many factors to consider including what sort of scent profile you want (floral, spicy, fruity etc.), what sort of occasions you want to wear it (do you want something that you can wear everyday, a bolder scent for special occasion, something that will make you stand out in a crowd) and how it will change throughout the day (scent profiles can evolve as your body heats up and cools down). It’s also a good idea to try out samples before you buy so you can see how the perfume fares on your skin. Perfumes are traditionally classified into five categories: Floral, Oriental, Woody, Aromatic Fougere, and Fresh. However, some scents defy traditional categorization. For example, the classic Chanel No. 5 is categorized as an Aldehydic Floral but it actually contains some of the characteristics of both the Woody and Oriental perfume families, making it a Chypre scent. Fresh perfumes are usually crisp and clean and often feature calone, a synthetic created in 1966, as well as modern oceanic molecules such as seaweed and seashell. It’s important to note that perfume can also change over time, and it’s recommended that you use a perfume within three years of opening it. This is because the scent can develop differently on different people’s bodies, and a few years of air exposure can make the composition slightly different from what it was originally. Perfumes that are stored in a dark and cool place should have a longer lifespan.
